Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine. It affects chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people with anxiety. Alprazolam is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and anxiety caused by depression.
Generic drug alprazolam. A small number of patients have developed a more severe adverse reaction from alprazolam that has required hospitalization. We report a case of serious adverse drug reaction from alprazolam dosing. In an observational study of drug users in San Francisco, reports of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) from intravenous alprazolam were systematically recorded ( 1 ). The reported ADRs from first 4 months of alprazolam use included 4 admissions to the intensive-care unit, a cardiac arrest, respiratory depression, bronchospasm, nausea, vomiting, and hypoventilation with pulmonary edema.
